Goals and Catholic Social Teaching/Thought
St Augustine College of South Africa
- 25 March 2015
The turn of the 20th into the 21st century brought with it also expectations that globalization would be canvassed in such a way that it would contribute to a better life for more people on the planet. A very visible sign of these expectations – and to a degree a commitment to improve living conditions by 2015 – were the Millennium Development Goals as launched by the General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2000. The introduction to this Round Table will first present a brief overview of these MDGs and some of the results to date. Next the question is raised as to the relation between these MDGs and key topics of Catholic Social Teaching/Thought under the headings of solidarity, subsidiarity and participation. Finally, the MDGs dealing with the issues of gender imbalance are highlighted in view of a potential conflict with CST.
