JUBILEE OF UNIVERSITIES AND RESEARCH CENTRES KNOWLEDGE AND MERCY – THE THIRD MISSION OF THE UNIVERSITY

"An education rich in values, to form people who can make fruitful the talents that God has entrusted to them." With these words, Pope Francis greeted the participants of the Jubilee of Universities and Research centers, held in Rome 7-11 Sept, 2016. The IFCU participated in this very important meeting, organized by the Congregation for Catholic Education in collaboration with the Diocesan Office for Pastoral University that was attended by more than 1,500 Rectors and delegates from some 60 countries.

 

Various sessions, Symposium of university professors, a World forum of Rectors of Research Centers, university managers  and of Ecclesial Movements and Associations  revolving around  the theme of Mercy  were presided at various forums by H. EM. Car. Joseph Versaldi President of the Congregation for Catholic education and the secretary of the Congregation H. Ex. Msgr. V. Zanni and several Rectors of the Roman Pontifical universities.

They and the speakers called for a commitment to direct educational models towards a gradual integration between the needs of society and the ability of universities to develop solutions that harmonize the environment and the economic needs of the planet within the context of mercy as its underlying principle.

There was a presentation of some guidelines of a working document on ‘A Charter of Rome 2016’ as a proposal of the aspiration for what universities of goodwill wish to reach. Within this frame is embedded a third mission of the university that for the university to help build the present and the future on the principle of mercy.
