Loyola University Chicago President and CEO Stepping Down

President and CEO Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., to Transition to Chancellor Role on July 1

 

CHICAGO, March 19, 2015 – Loyola University Chicago announced today that Michael J. Garanzini, S.J., will step down from his position as President and CEO of the University on June 30, 2015. After 14 years of leadership, Father Garanzini will assume the role of Chancellor of the University. 

 

This transition will allow Father Garanzini to satisfy the ever-increasing demands of his position as Secretary for Higher Education for the Society of Jesus, in which he is tasked with promoting Jesuit higher education around the world. As Chancellor, Father Garanzini will serve in an advisory capacity to advance strategic projects, assist the University’s Advancement Division with fundraising, and consult on international programs, as requested by the President and the Board of Trustees.

 

“It’s been a wonderful 14 years, and I am grateful for this opportunity to have served as President of Loyola University Chicago,” said Father Garanzini. “It’s really been a privilege and a great honor.”

 

Father Garanzini’s transition to Chancellor comes at a time when the University’s financial footing and academic programs are strong. During his tenure, the University saw significant growth in enrollment, an endowment that has nearly doubled, the transformation of its four main campuses, the early completion of a $500 million capital campaign, an increase in Loyola’s global footprint, a re-energized academic and campus life experience, and much more.

 

“It is impossible to overstate the impact that Father Garanzini has had on the revitalization of Loyola over the past 14 years,” said Robert L. Parkinson Jr., Chairman and CEO of Baxter International Inc., a double Loyola alumnus, and Chairman of Loyola University Chicago’s Board of Trustees. “As a result of Father Mike’s remarkable leadership, the University is extremely well positioned to meet the evolving challenges in higher education in the coming years.”

 

John Pelissero, PhD, the University’s Provost and Chief Academic Officer, has been appointed Interim President by the Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2015. A member of Loyola’s political science faculty for 30 years, Dr. Pelissero joined University administration in 2003 when he served as Associate Provost for Curriculum Development until 2005. From 2005–10, he held the position of Vice Provost until his election as Provost and Chief Academic Officer in 2010.

 

“Dr. Pelissero is uniquely qualified to lead Loyola during this important transition,” said Parkinson. “He is an important member of the University Cabinet, the Council of Deans, two committees of the Board of Trustees, and he serves as an ex officio member of the University Senate. His deep knowledge of Loyola and his invaluable contributions to our strategic efforts will continue to benefit Loyola and the students we serve.”

 

As the leader of academic affairs, Dr. Pelissero is responsible for managing two colleges, seven schools, two institutes, University Centers of Excellence, and the University Libraries.

 

“I am honored and humbled to be asked to serve as Loyola’s Interim President,” said Dr. Pelissero. “I greatly admire Father Garanzini and his accomplishments, and I will lead this transition with the same commitment to excellence that has been the hallmark of his presidency.”

 

Looking ahead, a comprehensive presidential search will be conducted over the next year. The University expects to retain a search firm that will assist a small group—primarily composed of Board of Trustees members—in conducting a national search for Loyola’s next leader. Jesuit and lay leaders will be considered for the position. Additional information regarding the search process will be available after the Board of Trustees meeting in June.
