Drug Use and Drug Abuse Risk Perceptions Among High School Teachers in Costa Rica

[EN] In a school based survey carried out in 1999, researchers from the National Institute on Drug Dependence (IAFA) surveyed 242 professors in order to learn about their use of drugs, their risk perceptions with regard to drug use and abuse, and their perceptions on drug use by students. A set on opinion toward prevention was used as well. The results from this survey indicated that alcohol and tobacco are the main drugs used by teachers and their perceptions with regard to drug dangerousness put crack on the detrimental side and tobacco on the other one. According to their opinion boys’ prevalence of drug use is higher than girls’ and they also gave great importance to prevention processes.
